APA Referencing Guide - Everything You Should Know About APA Style

APA referencing is most prominently used in subjects like humanities, economics, psychology, education, etc. It is considered to be the most convenient referencing style amongst all. You can do this type of citation on your own as well as you can use APA 6 referencing generator online. If you are looking for an overall guide of APA citation, then this write-up is for you.

Let’s start with APA referencing Basics:-
Referencing List:-
In this list, we include author name, date of publication, title and more. Your referencing list must be:-
1. On a new page and at the end of the document.
2. It should be in the center.
3. It should be alphabetically by the name of the first author
4. It should contain a complete reference for all in-text references used.
In-text Citation-
As the name suggests, in-text citations used within the body of the assignment and should refer to direct quotes or paraphrases. You have to mention all these sources in the reference list. The APA in-text citation includes the surname of authors and date of publication.
For example:-
Author Name- Robert James
Citation- James (1956) or (James, 1956)
Also, the structure of this can be changed depending upon whether it is a direct quote or parenthetical used.
For Example:
Direct Quote:
The citation should follow the quote directly and should contain a page number after the date.
For Example:
(James, 1956, p.201).
This rule is for all the variation listed.
Parenthetical: (James, 1956): no need for the page number.
How to cite with two authors?
While citing with two authors, the surname of both the authors is mentioned with either ‘and’ or ‘an ampersand’.
For Example:
Name of authors:
Robert James
Michel Smith
Citation: James and Smith (1956) states….. Or (Smith & James, 1956).
How to cite with three or more authors?
In three author citation, everything is similar to citing with two authors. The name of the authors should be listed, and before the name of the last author, there should be either ‘and’ or ‘&’.
For example-
Name of authors-
Robert James
Michel Smith
Jimmy Benjamin
Citation: James, Smith and Benjamin (1956) states…. Or (James, Smith & Benjamin, 1956)
These are the APA format, and you can use to cite your documents.
Hopefully, this was helpful for you. All the best.
